Frequently Asked Questions

What is Acorn Brokers?

Acorn Brokers (Pty) Ltd is a registered Financial Services Provider (FSP 47433), authorised by the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA). We specialise exclusively in legal and liability protection products for South African firearm owners.

Who can apply for Firearms Guardian?

Any South African citizen or permanent resident who holds a valid firearm licence issued under the Firearms Control Act (60 of 2000) can apply for Firearms Guardian. You must be the legal holder of at least one licensed firearm.

What does Firearms Guardian cover?

Firearms Guardian covers the legal costs arising from a self-defence incident involving a licensed firearm. This includes legal representation by qualified advocates, bail application costs, private forensic expert fees, and court appearance costs. The Comprehensive Tier also covers civil liability claims, licence application support, firearm estate planning, and accidental discharge incidents.

What is NOT covered by Firearms Guardian?

Firearms Guardian does not cover incidents involving unlicensed or illegally possessed firearms, incidents arising from the commission of a criminal offence, incidents where the insured was under the influence of alcohol or drugs, pre-existing legal matters, or fines and penalties imposed by a court.

What is the difference between the Entry and Comprehensive tiers?

The Entry Tier (R135/month) provides core legal defence cover up to R500,000, a 24/7 legal helpline, bail application assistance, and expert legal representation. The Comprehensive Tier (R245/month) includes everything in the Entry Tier plus civil liability cover, licence application support, self-defence incident management, firearm estate planning advice, and accidental discharge cover. See our Firearms Guardian page for full details.

How do I sign up for Firearms Guardian?

You can apply by calling us on +27 (0)69 007 6320 or emailing info@acornbrokers.co.za. One of our advisers will guide you through the application process, which includes verification of your firearm licence and completion of the necessary FAIS documentation.

What should I do in a self-defence incident?

If you are involved in a self-defence shooting, ensure you and your family are safe, then call SAPS (10111) immediately. Contact our 24/7 legal helpline as soon as possible. Do not provide a detailed statement to the police until you have spoken with your legal representative. Identify yourself, point out critical evidence, and invoke your right to remain silent until your legal counsel arrives. Read our article on how adrenaline destroys your legal defence for detailed guidance.

How quickly do you respond to incidents?

Our 24/7 legal helpline is staffed around the clock. When you call, you will be connected to a qualified legal professional who will provide immediate telephonic guidance. A legal representative will be dispatched to your location or the nearest police station as quickly as practicably possible, depending on your geographic location.

Can I cancel my Firearms Guardian policy?

Yes. You may cancel your policy at any time by providing 30 calendar days’ written notice. Any prepaid premiums for the period after the cancellation date will be refunded on a pro-rata basis. Note that cancellation means you will no longer have cover from the effective cancellation date.

Is my personal data protected under POPIA?

Absolutely. Acorn Brokers is fully compliant with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), Act 4 of 2013. We collect only the personal information necessary to provide our services, and we store and process your data in accordance with POPIA requirements. Please see our Privacy Policy for full details on how we handle your information.

What is the waiting period?

Firearms Guardian policies are subject to a 30-day waiting period from the date of inception. This means that incidents occurring within the first 30 days of the policy start date will not be covered. This waiting period is standard industry practice and helps prevent adverse selection.

How do I lodge a complaint?

We take all complaints seriously. You can lodge a complaint by emailing info@acornbrokers.co.za, calling +27 (0)69 007 6320, or writing to us at our Stellenbosch office. We will acknowledge receipt within 3 business days and aim to resolve the matter within 6 weeks. If you are not satisfied with our resolution, you may escalate your complaint to the FAIS Ombud.
